Situated approximately halfway between Johannesburg and Durban, about a 4-hour drive from either city, this beautiful part of South Africa offers superb hiking opportunities.
We stayed at Montusi Mountain Lodge – what a treat! Guests are accommodated in comfy thatched cottages, overlooking the famous Amphitheatre escarpment…
There is so much to do! The resort offers daily guided walks on the 1000 hectare estate with a dedicated Zulu guide, who will take visitors to the top of Montusi Mountain and to Bushman Cave (with paintings) and Waterfall Cave. Montusi will also arrange day hikes to the top of the Amphitheatre for the more adventurous, and mountain biking, swimming, fly fishing, golf, quad biking, paint balling, horse riding and zip lining are also on offer either at the Montusi estate or through All Out Adventures, located 10 minutes away.
It was hard finding the time to just relax and enjoy the views.
San Rock Art
We took a morning hike to the peak of Mount Montusi with the estate’s resident guide, Shadreck. Our walk took us through grassy meadows, still damp with the early morning dew…
On the way up, we made a slight detour behind a waterfall, to a cave with fascinating, ancient rock art from the San people (Bushmen)…
We had time to admire the flora and fauna…
It was a bit of a misty day, but still a special view from the top and a great spot for coffee and cookies before the descent.
